Vilcabamba Range
The central chain of the Andes, are referred to as Cordillera Vilcabamba. It is the last chain of mountains before reaching the highlands that drop dramatically into the Amazon Basin. The location is between the rivers Apurímac and Vilcanota, in the department of Cusco. This culturally fascinating region has changed little for centuries. The inhabitants of the high villages still wear very traditional dress. Almost unvisited since the time of the Incas, the Vilcabamba's potential as a trekking destination has only been recognized in the last few years. There is a diversity of scenery, including sub-tropical forest, pristine alpine valleys and snow-clad peaks. The nearby peak Salkantay is still worshipped as a god or "Apu" by the local Quechua people of the Cusco Region. This area is a truly inspiring part of the world that maintains the broad Inca roads and narrow trails, crossing mountain passes up to 4486,32 m (15,900 ft) breathtaking views of the picturesque peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba will provide most impressive memories.
The fate of the last Incas is a mystery that has intrigued historians and explorers for many years. After the conquest some member of the Royal line chose a comfortable but impotent existence in Cusco under Spanish tutelage, some collaborated openly with the new order.
The rebel Manco Inca had abandoned the fortress of Ollantaytambo in July 1537 and went into the area know as Vilcabamba, rough square block of territory bounded in the south and west by the Apurimac river, in the east by the Urubamba river, the southeast corner is walled in by the massive glacial ramparts of the cordillera Vilcabamba. And northern sector is ringed by the dense jungle lowland beyond the Cosireni River.
Manco Inca had organized in the inhospitable territory into a solid native state that continued to harass the Spanish until his death in 1544. By the mid-seventeenth century Vilcabamba was little more than a memory and its capital city was not even that.
The lost city of Vilcabamba has finally been located at Espiritu Pampa and contains some of the most beautiful country that you will ever see, and its people are warm and hospitable.
This trek takes you through the delightful landscape of the highlands and valley of Vilcabamba both with a great variety of animals (Monkeys, Parrots, Toucans, Eagles, Macaws, Snakes and many others) and an abundant vegetations of mountain and jungle.
