Bolivia for Adventures - 10 or 16 days program

Bolivia is one of the most rugged, unpopulated and intriguing countries in all South America. Our exploration combines nature, history and Anthropology in a challenging and innovative package.

From Inca ruins on an Island in Lake Titicaca to a white salt sea (Uyuni) to  flocks flamingos in salt flats (Red, Blue, White, Yellow and Green)beneath snow-capped volcanoes (Lincacabur- 5960m) , each day brings new wonders.

Program :

Day 1. Arrival to La Paz Airport. You have time to adapt to the altitude. Later we take an easy City tour including a stroll through the fascinating market district.

Day 2. Travel across the Altiplano to Lake Titicaca crossing the Tiquina street by ferry reaching Copacabana, a pilgrimage town close to Lake Titicaca we      board a boat for an excursion to Island of the Sun. Return to Copacabana for overnight.           

Day 3. We follow an rough road up into the Royal Range. Our destination is Chacaltaya world’s highest ski resort. From the lodge we hike to the top of the rope tow at an elevation of 5221 m. We continue on a skyline route to the mining town of Milluni at the base of Nevado Huayna Potosi (6090 m) in the heart of the Royal Cordillera. Return to La Paz in time to catch the night train to Uyuni.

Day 4. Depart in 4WD vehicles across the vast expanse of salt flats west of Uyuni. Our first landmark amid the otherworldly scenery is Isla Pescado or Incawasi island and later we continue to our Camp at Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon).

Day 5.  Visit Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon). The red color is produced by algae which are the principal food of the rare James Flamingo, which nests on islands on the lake. In addition to exploring the lake area, we visit Sol de Manana, an incredible active geothermal area with venting fumaroles. Overnight in camp.

Day 6. Traverse de salt flats back to Manica.

Day 7. We leave the Salt flats behind and we enter more rugged mountainous country and travel eastward to the historic mining city of Potosi. Overnight hotel.

Day 8. Potosi was the most important city in the New World during the height of the 17th century silver boom. Visit a working mine in the morning within the famous Cerro Rico. Tour the Casa de la Moneda, formerly the Royal Mint and now an excellent museum evoking that boom period. Continue to Sucre for overnight.

Day 9. Early departure for the famous market at Tarabuco, where the men wear stiff leather hats modeled on the steel helmets of the conquistadores. Return to Sucre , overnight in hotel.

Day 10. Following a morning tour of Sucre, you transfer to the airport for the afternoon flight to La Paz.

Possible extension to the Amazon as follows:

Day 11. Fly to Rurrenabaque, reception and transfer to hotel.

Dag12. By canoe up the Beni and Tuichi rivers, a trip of 10 hours. Hike into the forest to our base camp at Laguna Chalalan.

Day13. Nature hikes in the forest.

Day14. Return to the river and downstream to Rurrenabaque. Evening farewell barbecue.

Day15/16.  Fly out to La Paz, overnight and transfer out to the airport.
